| Pure pot still whiskey | Whiskey made with equal portions of malted and non-malted barley. Typical Irish. |
| Single malt | Made from malted barley in one distillery. Not mixed with different malts. |
| Vatted malt | Made from malted barley in several distilleries. A blend of single malts. |
| Pur malt | Made from malted barley. The description does not explain whether it is a vatted malt or single malt. |
| Dram | A glass or portion of whisky |
| uisge beatha | Gaelic for "water of life". Uisge became uiskie which became whisky. |
| kiln | Area where the malted barley is dried over an open fire. Identifiable by the distinct pagoda shaped chimney. |
| grist | Malted barley crushed into a rough flouer. |
| mash tun | Large metal tub used for mashing. |
| wort | Sweet liquid extracted in the mashing process. Used as liquid for fermentation. |
| draff | Residual after mashing process. Reprocessed for cattle feed. |
| wash backs | Large pine vats to collect the cooled wort from the mashing process. |
| wash | Fermented liquid which goes into the distilling process. |
| wash still | Large still used for the first distillation. |
| spirit still | Still used in the second distillation process. |
| spirit safe | Chamber to measure and direct the liquid towards the wanted receptacle. |
| low wines | Liquid after the first distillation. |
| angel's share | 1-2% of evaporation per year during maturation in casks. |
